Sweetland by Micheal Crummey
This novel takes place on a remote island in Newfoundland and the main character is Moses Sweetland.
After prosperity for 12 generations, the fish have all dried up and Moses must face the angst of being the final holdout regarding the government’s plan to relocate the village to the mainland.
Crummey weaves a riveting story intertwining the events of Sweetlands life, the drama surrounding the relocation and the psychological effect that the proceedings have on Sweetland.
Crummy’s pace is perfect, his description of both the setting and the people’s daily lives paint intricate pictures. Sweetland is a must read book that entertains and stays in one’s thoughts.
