The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

10-year-old Ada has never left her one room flat in London and she cares for her younger brother Jamie despite her mother’s abuse and humiliation. With the threat of war and the possible bombing of London, Ada escapes to the English countryside with Jamie, on a train filled with other children being evacuated from the threat of danger.

A historical fiction story for all ages, we see Ada and her brother discover a world outside of the grey misery of London’s poorest. Ada finds that she is truly loveable despite her handicap and is capable of giving love in return.

The War That Saved My Life is written for older children but adults and history enthusiasts will enjoy this story as well. It is available in Playaway format and is a great story to listen to while enjoying a summer walk.
