The Emperor of Any Place by Tim Wynne-Jones

Sixteen year old Evan is trying to cope with his father's sudden death and in amongst his father's things he finds a diary of a Japanese soldier stranded on a small Pacific Island in World War II. He has no idea what this has to do with his father, or why his father was reading it and as he reads he learns that an American soldier was also stranded there.

Evan knows his grandfather was a spit and polish marine but he's never met the man. Evan's father and grandfather had a major falling out when Evan's father became a draft dodger and escaped to Canada during the Vietnam war.

As Evan reads the diary the story evolves to include ghosts and zombies that also live on the mysterious island. If things aren't complicated enough Evan's estranged grandfather shows up to "help" him deal with the legalities of his father's death.

The reviewer found the historical aspect, especially, how two enemies work together to survive the most intriguing part of the story. Young adults will also be intrigued by the appearance of the ghosts and zombies. If this sounds like something you would want to read, head to your local branch and request a copy.

The Girl from Summer Hill by Jude Deveraux

Jude Deveraux brings Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice into the 21st century.

Casey Reddick is pretty satisfied and doesn't let much drag her out of her kitchen. She doesn't realize she's renting her guesthouse from a movie star until he shows up naked in her outdoor shower. Casey hasn't seen any of his movies and thinks he is trespassing, meanwhile, movie star Tate thinks she's a peeping star-struck fan.

Through a series of events both are cast in the lead roles of a local stage production of Pride and Prejudice. They continue their feud as Lizzy Bennett and Mr. Darcy. The play and the modern day story are intertwined.

Deveraux's characters are modern counterparts to Austen's. The evil Wickham is played by Tate's devious brother-in-law. Included in the plot is an underage young girl who plays the part of Lydia, the youngest Bennet sister. Thankfully the 21st century advancement in women's rights makes for a better for comeuppance and redemption when all is revealed.
